UPS vs FedEx vs USPS - Which Is Cheapest?
The answer depends on weight, distance, and destination type. No single carrier wins in every situation, which is why comparing before you ship matters. Here is how the carriers generally stack up:
- USPS wins for packages under 2-3 lbs, especially to residential addresses and short zones. No residential surcharge is a major advantage for e-commerce sellers.
- UPS and FedEx Ground are very close in price - usually within a dollar for the same weight and zone. The real difference comes from surcharges, negotiated discounts, and which carrier has better coverage in your area.
- For overnight and 2-day air, UPS and FedEx are nearly identical at retail rates. Account discounts and your existing carrier relationship usually determine which to use.
What This Calculator Does Not Include
The rates shown are estimated retail base rates. Several surcharges are not included and can significantly increase the final cost:
- Fuel surcharges: 20-26% on UPS and FedEx, updated weekly, applied on top of base rates
- Residential delivery fee: $5-7 added for home deliveries at UPS and FedEx (USPS does not charge this)
- DIM weight: If your package is large and light, DIM weight may apply and increase the billed weight
- Account discounts: Business accounts typically receive 20-55% off retail rates - your actual cost is likely lower
- Extended area and address correction fees: Additional charges for rural ZIP codes or address errors
When USPS Is the Best Choice
USPS Priority Mail is most competitive for packages under 3 lbs, especially zones 1-4 and residential destinations. The lack of a residential delivery surcharge alone can save $5-7 per package compared to UPS and FedEx. USPS flat rate boxes are often the best option for heavy, dense items shipping longer distances - a large flat rate box ships anywhere in the US for a fixed price regardless of weight (up to 70 lbs).
