About UPS Shipping Rates

UPS rates are based on four factors: the billable weight (actual or DIM weight, whichever is greater), the shipping zone between origin and destination, the service level (Ground, 2nd Day Air, Next Day Air), and any applicable surcharges. The rates shown here are retail list rates - most shippers pay less through negotiated accounts or third-party platforms.

UPS Shipping Zones

UPS zones range from Zone 2 (local/regional) to Zone 8 (cross-country). The zone is determined by the distance between origin and destination ZIP codes - not state boundaries. A shipment from Chicago to nearby Indiana could be Zone 2, while Chicago to Los Angeles is Zone 7 or 8. Alaska and Hawaii are always Zone 8 regardless of origin.

UPS Surcharges to Watch For

The base rate is rarely the final rate. Common surcharges that add to every shipment:

  • Residential Delivery: $5.40-$6.90 added for home deliveries
  • Fuel Surcharge: 20-25% added on top of base rate, updated weekly
  • Additional Handling: $31+ for oversized, heavy, or irregularly shaped packages
  • Large Package Surcharge: $90+ for packages over 96 inches on the longest side or 130 inches length plus girth
  • Extended Area Delivery: $17.50+ for rural ZIP codes
  • Address Correction: $17+ if UPS has to correct a wrong address

How to Reduce UPS Shipping Costs

  • Open a UPS account - even small shippers get 20-30% off retail rates automatically
  • Use a shipping platform like ShipStation, Pirateship, or EasyPost for additional discounts on top of account rates
  • Minimize package dimensions to avoid DIM weight charges - each extra inch increases billed weight
  • Use UPS Ground when delivery time is flexible - it is often half the price of 2nd Day Air
  • Ship to commercial addresses when possible to avoid the $5-7 residential delivery surcharge
