What is a Fuel Surcharge?
A fuel surcharge is a variable fee added to base shipping rates by carriers to offset fluctuating fuel costs. UPS and FedEx calculate their surcharges as a percentage of the base transportation charge, updated weekly based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) fuel price index published each Monday.
How Much Does the Fuel Surcharge Add to Shipping Costs?
At current rates, fuel surcharges add approximately 22-30% to the base shipping rate depending on the carrier and service. On a $15 base rate shipment, that is $3.30-$4.50 in fuel surcharges alone. For high-volume shippers, fuel surcharges can represent a significant portion of total annual shipping spend.
How are UPS and FedEx Fuel Surcharges Calculated?
Both carriers tie their surcharges to the EIA weekly retail fuel price report. When fuel prices rise, surcharge rates increase on the following Monday. Ground and air services have different surcharge tables since air transport is more fuel-intensive. International services carry the highest surcharges.
