What is the De Minimis Threshold?

The de minimis threshold is the maximum value a shipment can have before import duties and taxes are charged. Each country sets its own threshold. The U.S. de minimis is $800, meaning most small packages shipped to the U.S. from abroad are duty-free. Canada has one of the lowest at $20 CAD, making Canadian imports frequently subject to duties and GST.

How is International Volumetric Weight Calculated?

International air freight uses the IATA standard divisor of 6,000 cm3/kg. Multiply length x width x height (in cm) and divide by 6,000 to get volumetric weight in kg. You are charged whichever is greater - actual weight or volumetric weight.

USPS vs. FedEx vs. UPS vs. DHL for International Shipping

  • USPS First Class International: Cheapest, best for small/light packages under 4 lbs, limited tracking
  • USPS Priority Mail International: Good balance of cost and speed, full tracking
  • FedEx / UPS International: Most reliable, full tracking, best for business shipments
  • DHL Express: Often fastest for remote international destinations, extensive global network
