What is Declared Value?

Declared value is the amount you tell a carrier your shipment is worth for liability purposes. By default, UPS, FedEx, and USPS cover up to $100 of liability at no extra charge. If your package is worth more than $100 and gets lost or damaged, you'll only be reimbursed up to $100 unless you declare a higher value.

Declared Value vs. Shipping Insurance

Declared value is not insurance - it's a liability cap. The carrier still controls the claims process and may deny or reduce payouts based on packaging, prohibited items, or other factors. True shipping insurance (through third-party providers) typically offers broader coverage and faster claims.

Carrier Liability Limits

  • UPS: Maximum declared value of $50,000 per package
  • FedEx: Maximum declared value of $50,000 per package (some services vary)
  • USPS: Maximum of $5,000 for Priority Mail Express, $5,000 for Priority Mail

Certain item categories (electronics, jewelry, art, cash) may be excluded or have lower limits regardless of declared value. Always review your carrier's terms.
