What is Volumetric Weight?
Volumetric weight (also called cubic weight or DIM weight) is a pricing technique used by carriers to account for the space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight. If a package is large but light, you may be charged based on volumetric weight rather than actual weight.
The IATA Standard (International Shipping)
For international air freight, the IATA standard divisor is 6,000 cm鲁/kg. This means a package with a volume of 6,000 cm鲁 has a volumetric weight of 1 kg. Most international couriers (DHL, FedEx International, UPS Worldwide) use this divisor.
Domestic US Carriers
UPS and FedEx domestic use 139 cubic inches per pound. USPS Priority Mail uses 166 cubic inches per pound and only applies DIM pricing to packages over 1 cubic foot.
