DHL uses volumetric (chargeable) weight
DHL charges for whichever is greater: actual weight or volumetric weight. Volumetric weight (kg) = (L cm x W cm x H cm) / 5000. For large, light packages, volumetric weight will apply and increase your cost significantly.
Estimates only - retail rates
These are estimated 2026 DHL retail rates. Actual rates depend on origin ZIP, exact destination, fuel surcharges (~25-35%), remote area surcharges, and your DHL account discounts. Business accounts and high-volume shippers receive significant discounts. Get an exact quote at dhl.com.
DHL Express vs. UPS/FedEx International
For international shipments from the US, DHL Express is often the strongest option - particularly to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. DHL has the largest international network of the three carriers, with direct customs clearance relationships in many countries that reduce delays. UPS and FedEx are competitive on North American routes (Canada, Mexico) and major European hubs.
DHL Domestic Shipping
DHL Express does not offer domestic US shipping (they exited the US domestic market in 2009). For domestic packages, use UPS, FedEx, or USPS. DHL is exclusively for international shipments from the US.
DHL Zones Explained
- Zone 1 (Canada, Mexico): Closest destinations - typically 2-3 day transit
- Zone 2 (UK, Western Europe): Major trading partners - 2-4 days
- Zone 3 (Eastern Europe, Japan, Australia): Mid-range international - 3-5 days
- Zone 4 (SE Asia, India, South America): Longer routes - 3-6 days
- Zone 5 (Middle East, Africa): Most remote - 4-7 days, remote area surcharges common
DHL Surcharges to Know
- Fuel surcharge: 25-35% added to base rate (varies monthly)
- Remote area surcharge: $30-100+ for deliveries to non-urban addresses
- Out-of-gauge surcharge: For oversized packages exceeding dimension thresholds
- Duties and taxes: Import duties at destination are separate and paid by recipient (unless DDP billing is arranged)
