Important note

Transit times are estimates based on carrier-published maps from major metro areas. Actual delivery may vary by origin ZIP, weather, and holiday schedules. Cutoff times (typically 7-8 PM for ground dropoff) affect same-day pickup.

How Carrier Transit Times Work

Each major carrier - UPS, FedEx, and USPS - publishes transit day maps that show estimated delivery times based on the distance between origin and destination ZIP codes. These distances are broken into numbered zones. The lower the zone number, the closer the shipment and the faster the delivery.

Ground vs. Air Services

Ground services count only weekdays as transit days. A Zone 4 UPS Ground shipment sent on a Thursday, for example, takes 3 transit days counting Friday, Monday, and Tuesday - arriving Tuesday. Air services (Next Day Air, 2Day) are more consistent across zones and some offer Saturday delivery for an additional fee.

How Zones Affect Delivery Time

  • Zone 2: Same state or nearby - typically 1 day ground
  • Zone 4: Mid-range distance (~600-800 miles) - typically 3 days ground
  • Zone 8: Cross-country (1,800+ miles) - up to 5-7 days ground

Holiday and Cutoff Considerations

During peak shipping seasons (Thanksgiving through Christmas), carriers often experience delays of 1-2 additional business days beyond published transit times. Carrier retail locations typically close early the day before major holidays, and packages dropped off after the cutoff time (usually 7-8 PM) count as being shipped the next business day.
