What Triggers Additional Handling Fees

UPS and FedEx apply additional handling fees when a package exceeds any of these thresholds: actual weight over 70 lbs, longest side over 96 inches, second longest side over 30 inches, or length plus girth (L + 2W + 2H) over 130 inches. The fee is approximately $26.50 per package at both carriers.

What Triggers Large Package Surcharges

A large package surcharge of approximately $115.00 applies when the longest side exceeds 96 inches, or when length plus girth exceeds 130 inches. Both the additional handling fee and the large package surcharge can apply simultaneously to the same package. Packages over 108 inches in length or 165 inches in length plus girth exceed carrier maximums and will be refused.

When to Use LTL Freight Instead

If your products regularly exceed UPS and FedEx size thresholds, LTL freight pricing by pallet avoids these per-package surcharges entirely. Use the LTL Cost Estimator to compare freight rates for your shipments.

Surcharge amounts are approximate 2026 rates. Exact fees vary by carrier account and service type. Verify current rates with your UPS or FedEx account representative.
