What Is Package Girth?
Girth is the measurement around the middle of a package, calculated as 2 times the width plus 2 times the height: Girth = 2W + 2H. Carriers use girth along with length to enforce size limits and determine whether large package surcharges apply. The combined "length plus girth" measurement is the most commonly used sizing metric across USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL.
Why Girth Matters for Shipping Costs
A package that looks lightweight can still trigger large package surcharges if its girth is too large. Carriers sort and handle packages using automated equipment sized for standard packages. Large packages require manual handling, which is why carriers charge additional fees - often $15-$100 per package - when size thresholds are exceeded.
How Carriers Measure Packages
- Length is always the longest side of the package
- Width and height are the two shorter dimensions
- Girth wraps around the two shorter sides: 2W + 2H
- All major carriers measure length plus girth to enforce their maximum combined size limits
- DHL uses slightly stricter limits for international express shipments
Additional Handling Fees
UPS and FedEx both charge Additional Handling fees when any single package dimension exceeds 60 inches, when a package is irregularly shaped, or when it cannot be processed through automated sorting equipment. These fees are applied at scan time and can add $15-$25 per package to your shipping cost. Avoiding oversized packaging is one of the most effective ways to control shipping expenses.
