How to Calculate Boxes Per Pallet

To calculate boxes per pallet, first determine how many boxes fit in a single layer by dividing the pallet length by the box length and the pallet width by the box width. Multiply these two numbers together. Then divide your maximum stack height by the box height to get the number of layers. Multiply layers by boxes per layer for the total. Always check both normal and rotated box orientations - rotating 90 degrees often yields more boxes per layer.

Standard Pallet Dimensions

  • Standard GMA Pallet: 48" x 40" (1,219 x 1,016 mm) - most common in North America
  • Euro Pallet: 47.24" x 31.50" (1,200 x 800 mm) - standard in Europe and international shipping
  • Half Pallet: 48" x 20" - used for smaller shipments or display purposes

Pallet Weight Limits

Always verify weight limits with your carrier. LTL carriers typically limit pallets to 2,500-3,500 lbs for structural and forklift safety reasons, even though the pallet itself may be rated higher. Pallets that are top-heavy, unstable, or improperly shrink-wrapped may be refused or surcharge at the carrier's discretion.

How to Stack Pallets Efficiently

Place the heaviest boxes on the bottom layers to lower the center of gravity. Stack boxes in a column pattern (each box directly above the one below) for lighter loads, or in a brick pattern (alternating rows) for more structural integrity in tall stacks. Secure all pallets with stretch wrap - at least 3-4 wraps around the bottom and top. Use edge protectors for fragile items. Label the pallet clearly on all four sides with destination, weight, and handling instructions.
