How UPS SurePost Works
UPS SurePost is a hybrid service where UPS handles pickup and long-haul transport, then hands packages off to USPS for last-mile delivery. Because USPS already services every residential address daily, this model reduces costs - and UPS passes some of those savings to shippers. The tradeoff is 1-2 extra days of transit time.
When SurePost Saves Money
- Lightweight packages under 10 lbs where the rate gap is largest
- Residential addresses - SurePost carries no residential surcharge
- Zones 2-5 where the savings are most meaningful relative to Ground rates
- P.O. box destinations - SurePost can deliver there, Ground cannot
When UPS Ground Is Better
- Speed matters - Ground is typically 1-2 days faster
- Heavier packages (over 15 lbs) where the rate gap narrows
- Commercial addresses where Ground has no residential surcharge disadvantage
- Signature required on delivery - SurePost does not support this
Rates are estimated 2026 retail values. UPS SurePost rates are not publicly published - actual rates depend on your UPS account agreement and volume discounts.
